How do you listen?

When we hear a Dharma talk or study a sutra, our only job is to remain open. Usually when we hear or read something new, we just compare it to our own ideas. If it is the same, we accept it and say that it is correct. If it is not, we say it is incorrect. In either case, we learn nothing. If we read or listen with an open mind and an open heart, the rain of the Dharma will penetrate the soil of our consciousness.

While reading or listening, don't work too hard. Be like the earth. When the rain comes, the earth only has to open herself up to the rain. Allow the rain of the Dharma to come in and penetrate the seeds that are buried deep in your consciousness. A teacher cannot give you the truth. The truth is already in you. You only need to open yourself - body, mind, and heart - so that his or her teachings will penetrate your own seeds of understanding and enlightenment. if you let the words enter you, the soil and the seeds will do the rest of the work.

Moonwalking on walls

Thanks Abigail Badillo for the lead up to this post

Oh the days of waiting for Ara to go to sleep....before I stumbled onto Jon Kabit-Zinn.
I would start out in peace then slowly my teeth would start to gnash...which of course was totally not cool for getting anyone off to sleep.

Last night wow We've come such a long way!
Hamish started to feed off to sleep....but he's not really all that keen anymore...so he had his fill then rolled over and rubbed Dave's pillow (like ruffing up the cat big time) then fell off to sleep.
By which time Ara had had her story with Dave and was pounding down the hall way...flying leap into bed...."Ara watch out PLEASE!" for the hundredth time as she jumps on my feet.
Dave fumbles round to pack his bag for work then leaves us in darkness.
"Hugs Mum" Ara wriggles into my arms to warm up then after about a minute gets up into her own bed. I go and give her some hugs then rub her back for few seconds....hold her hand...her breathing slows....she's out for the count.
Not joking she only takes about 5-10mins at the moment.

I sit there and listen to my children sleep for another 10mins...just totally happy then go join Dave for the evening.

How do I do it on my own?

When Hamish was little I used to feed him off to sleep while I read to Ara at the same time...this lasted really well until Hamish was about 7-8 months old.
Then I used to ask Ara to wait until Hamish was asleep just look through her books quietly...but 9 out of 10 she would fall asleep before I got to read to her...so that was not good for our time.
So I set up a little sort movie or something of the like for 15 minutes. Then its our time.

You find a way.
