When we hear a Dharma talk or study a sutra, our only job is to remain open. Usually when we hear or read something new, we just compare it to our own ideas. If it is the same, we accept it and say that it is correct. If it is not, we say it is incorrect. In either case, we learn nothing. If we read or listen with an open mind and an open heart, the rain of the Dharma will penetrate the soil of our consciousness.

While reading or listening, don't work too hard. Be like the earth. When the rain comes, the earth only has to open herself up to the rain. Allow the rain of the Dharma to come in and penetrate the seeds that are buried deep in your consciousness. A teacher cannot give you the truth. The truth is already in you. You only need to open yourself - body, mind, and heart - so that his or her teachings will penetrate your own seeds of understanding and enlightenment. if you let the words enter you, the soil and the seeds will do the rest of the work.

Are you telling me my parents were wrong?

This remark is one of the hardest to get over when said to you when you are trying to explain that it’s not ok to let your children cry it out.

I would like to respond (if I can remember my brain as I always have problems having the right words at the right time)…something along the lines of
Your parents followed 'current' (for that time in the 40's-60's) scientific or accepted childcare theories.
I am no different…I am following current for this day 2000's scientific, psychological, human developmental and anthropological biological childcare theories….not someone writing today but using 40's-60's theories.

I expect my children will have moved on even further from where I am today and possibly be doing something different again.

I agree. Our parents got us this far. They can be credited for that. It's a more positive and healthy approach than our parents missed the mark and we're trying to make things right....

Yes I often look at my parents...the co-sleepers and the 'long' breastfeeders....there are always a few more steps to go that you might not of known about or maybe its the next generation that learns about it.

Well I think you've got it right with raising infants - I don't think there's much room for improvement.
There is a way to treat a baby with respect and you're doing well. :)
